What Is the Elective Residency Visa?

The Elective Residency Visa (Type D) allows non-EU citizens to live in Italy without working, as long as they have stable passive income.

Who Is Eligible?

  • Stable passive income (pension, investment, rental)
  • Own or rent a home in Italy
  • Hold private health insurance
  • No professional activity (even remote work)
  • Intend to live in Italy long-term

Required Documents

  1. Completed Type D visa application
  2. Valid passport
  3. Recent passport photo
  4. Motivation letter (why you want to move, where you’ll live, how you’ll support yourself)
  5. Proof of financial means (bank statements, income from property, pensions)
  6. Proof of accommodation in Italy (title deed or lease)
  7. Private health insurance valid for 12 months
  8. Criminal record certificate (optional but recommended)
  9. Travel itinerary or flight booking (optional)
  10. Consular fee payment (~€116)
